A: The National Schools Project has been operation since
1994 when the first Young American Poetry Digest was
published.

A: The Young American Poetry Digest is an annual publication
of poems that have been written by students throughout the
United States. The students’ poems are submitted by teachers
from public and private schools who wish to participate.
4) Q: Who can participate in the National Schools
Project?
A: Any student from a public or private school within the
United States or Canada.
5) Q: How do I submit poetry from my own school or class
so they can be considered for publication in the Young
American Poetry Digest?
A: To submit your students’ work:
1. collect your students’ best poetry.
2. typed or handwritten is acceptable (if handwritten,
the poems must be legible)
3. the poems must be under 80 words
4. the student’s poem, name, school, and address must be
legible

7) Q: Can my students submit more than one poem?
A: Your students can submit as many poems as they desire.
However, only the one poem can be selected for publication
by the selection panel.
8) Q: How many poems are selected for publication?
A. The poem submissions are reviewed by a panel of educators
and poems are chosen based on the factors discussed above.
9) Q: Do I have to supply student addresses in order for
the poems to be considered?
A. Be aware that privacy is a major concern (we are
educators as well) and no student information is ever
disclosed in any way or form. However, if you prefer to not
include student addresses, then give the school address as
the student’s address on the submission form. Permission
forms will then be sent directly to you to distribute to the
student.
10) Q: When will my students know if they have been
selected for publication?
A: The authors of poems selected will be notified
individually and written parental permission gained to print
their poetry early in April.
11) Q: When is the Young American Poetry Digest
published?
A: The Digest is published once a year and sent out to
subscribers no later than October 31.
12) Q: What does it cost to purchase a copy of the Young
American Poetry Digest?
A: The Young American Poetry Digest costs $11.00 (U.S.)
and $3.25 shipping and handling. However, each participating
school will receive a free copy for their library.
